Spygate paralyzes Championship decision between Hull and Southampton

Hearing may postpone final at Wembley; fans criticize uncertainty

May 15, 2026

The Championship playoff final between Hull City and Southampton, scheduled for this Saturday at Wembley, is under threat due to the Spygate scandal. The EFL (English Football League) confirmed that the match may be postponed depending on the outcome of the disciplinary hearing on the espionage allegations against Southampton.

The scandal looming over Wembley

Southampton is facing a hearing before an Independent Disciplinary Commission this week, after being accused by the EFL of observing a Middlesbrough training session within the 72-hour period before the first leg of the semifinals between the teams. The case, dubbed Spygate, resulted in a formal charge against the club and put the realization of the big Championship decision in question, which should bring together around 72,000 fans at the sacred stadium of English football.

What are the possible punishments?

The EFL officially recognized that there is no specific regulatory framework for this type of infraction, which makes the case even more nebulous. Among the penalties under consideration are a simple financial fine, points deduction, or even expulsion from the playoffs. If the latter option is applied, Middlesbrough could take Southampton's place in the decision, completely changing the scenario for access to the Premier League.

Hull fans pay the price of uncertainty

While the hearing does not take place, the fans are the most affected. The Hull City Official Supporters Club issued an official statement criticizing the EFL's attitude and explaining that many fans had already bought tickets and booked accommodation in London. 'Basically, they tell us: buy the ticket and run the risk', journalist and Hull fan Bobbi Huyton told BBC Radio 5 Live. 'It may not even happen next week. Just frustration and indignation with the treatment given to the situation.'
