Inter Milan wins Italian double after 14 years

Nerazzurri beat Lazio in Coppa Italia and secure national title and cup in the same season for the first time since 2010

May 13, 2026

Inter Milan wrote another glorious chapter in its history by winning the Italian double on Wednesday. With a 2-0 victory over Lazio in the Coppa Italia final, the Nerazzurri secured the league and cup double for the first time since the legendary 2009/10 season, when José Mourinho led the club to a historic treble.

An achievement that was missing from Inzaghi's resume

Coach Simone Inzaghi finally achieved the title that was missing from his resume at Inter. After leading the team to the Italian Championship title with three rounds to spare, the Nerazzurri commander completed the season with the domestic double. This was the first time Inter won the Coppa Italia since 2022, when they also defeated Juventus in the final. The feat takes on even more relevance considering that the club had not won the Italian double since the Mourinho era, 14 years ago.

Lazio facilitates and gifts two goals to rivals

The game played at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome was marked by crucial defensive errors by Lazio that made life easy for Inter. The first goal came in the 14th minute after a corner kick by Federico Dimarco from the right. Lazio defender Adam Marusic involuntarily deflected the ball into his own goal, opening the scoring. The second goal was even more symbolic of the Roman defense's failure: left-back Nuno Tavares was disarmed by Denzel Dumfries outside the area, and the Dutchman rolled the ball for captain Lautaro Martínez to complete into an empty net. The Argentine striker had one of the easiest goals of his career, simply pushing the ball into the goal from three meters away.

Revenge and total dominance in Rome

Wednesday's final was a kind of revenge for Inter, who had already faced Lazio last Saturday in the Italian Championship at the same Stadio Olimpico. On that occasion, the Nerazzurri thrashed their opponents 3-0, in a kind of dress rehearsal for the Coppa Italia final. Inter's dominance over Lazio this season was absolute, with the Nerazzurri demonstrating tactical and technical superiority in both decisive matches played in the Italian capital.

Inzaghi's legacy and promising future

With this double, Simone Inzaghi consolidates his name among the great coaches in Inter's recent history. The commander arrived at the club in 2021, replacing Antonio Conte, and built a solid and competitive team, capable of fighting on all fronts. Although the Champions League slipped away in the semifinals this season, the domestic consistency achieved by the coach demonstrates the good work done. Inter now looks to the next season with the ambition to repeat the achievements and, who knows, seek the long-awaited return to the Champions League final.
